There’s no such thing as bad publicity, right?

‘There’s no such thing as bad publicity’ is often associated with Phineas T. Barnum, the 19th century American showman and circus owner. Barnum was a self-publicist of the first order and never missed an opportunity to present his wares to the public. As with many other supposed quotations, there’s no hard evidence to link the ‘bad publicity’ quotation to him.

 Of course two Irish writers weigh in on the subject. 

According to Stanford University research, negative publicity can increase sales when a product or company is relatively unknown simply because it stimulates product awareness. However, when a product is well known like McDonalds or Apple, negative publicity can hurt sales and public perception.

One final example is Donald Trump. Most of the major TV networks and newspapers editorials are very negative about him. Although he is well known as a business person, he may not have been as well known in the political arena. Is all the negative coverage hurtingor helping him. Well he’s only 3 percentage points behind Hilary on a CNN poll and she’s been working towards the presidency for 30 years.
